Rita's Story: "I don't want to hear the heartbeat."

With two young children to care for, Rita* and her long-time boyfriend were not prepared to find out she was pregnant again. She wasn’t able to work during her two prior pregnancies, and they needed every dime just to get by. Though she was struggling with the idea of aborting, they both agreed it was the best option.

When Rita arrived for her appointment, she was relieved to find the atmosphere in the clinic to be warm and comforting. She discussed her fears and concerns with her care team before having an ultrasound to determine the status of her pregnancy. As we began, she could easily see the screen, but said, “I don’t want to hear the heartbeat.”   

We proceeded with the volume turned down, but Rita couldn’t hide the look of awe as she watched the image of her 7-week old baby on screen.    

After her ultrasound, she shared that she had gone to church as a child, and welcomed the idea of knowing more about Jesus and growing in her faith.    

Hearing the message of the Gospel seemed to rekindle hope in Rita’s heart. She left with a copy of The Book of John, as well as a list of resources that could help provide support for her family.    

One week later, Rita returned for her follow up appointment early, eager to see how her baby was growing and to spend more time with her care team. During the ultrasound, she was thrilled to learn that her baby was growing normally. This time, she asked to hear the heartbeat as well.    

As we talked after her ultrasound, Rita let us know that she had decided to keep her baby, and was working on setting appointments with one of the OB providers we had recommended!
