Stages of Fetal Development:
Week-by-Week Growth From Conception to Birth
Fetal development is a remarkable process that begins in the earliest weeks of pregnancy and continues through birth. From the formation of the brain and spinal cord to movement, hearing, lung development and rapid brain growth, every stage brings significant new milestones.
This fetal development timeline follows pregnancy week by week through all three trimesters. Explore each stage below to see what is developing and when.

Fetal Development Timeline
The first trimester is a period of incredible transformation. During these first thirteen weeks, a single fertilized egg develops into a fetus with a beating heart, a rapidly growing brain, and all of the body’s major organ systems beginning to form. Although the baby is only a few inches long by the end of this trimester, the foundation for every major body system has already been established.
Often called the “growth trimester,” the second trimester is when many parents first feel their baby’s movements. Muscles strengthen, the senses continue developing, fingerprints are completed, and the lungs and brain continue maturing. By the end of this trimester, babies are increasingly active and capable of responding to sounds from outside the womb.
During the final weeks of pregnancy, a baby prepares for life outside the womb. Rapid brain development, lung maturation, and healthy weight gain continue while reflexes become stronger and the body stores fat to help regulate temperature after birth. By full term, every organ system is prepared to function outside the uterus.
Amazing Facts About Fetal Development
Each of these milestones reminds us why compassionate, early intervention matters — when a woman is met with love and support before abortion feels like her only option, she’s able to witness these miracles firsthand.
- Around 22 days, the developing heart begins beating.
- By the end of the third trimester every major organ system has begun to form.
- Fingerprints are fully developed before birth and remain unique throughout life.
- Babies can recognize familiar voices during the third trimester.
- The brain continues developing rapidly throughout pregnancy and well into childhood.
At Caring Network, we believe every woman deserves to witness these milestones firsthand — not through pressure, but through presence. Through strategic digital outreach, compassionate medical care, and lasting relational support, we’re reaching abortion-minded women before abortion presents itself as the only option. When a woman is met early — with an ultrasound, a listening ear, and tangible help — everything changes. Sixty percent of the women we serve choose life. Not because they were told to, but because they were surrounded with the care that made it possible. This is how abortion becomes obsolete: one woman, one baby, one future at a time.
FAQ:
What are the stages of fetal development?
Fetal development progresses through the germinal, embryonic and fetal stages. Pregnancy is also commonly divided into three trimesters, with developmental milestones occurring throughout approximately 40 weeks of pregnancy.
When does fetal development begin?
Pregnancy is dated from the first day of the last menstrual period, although fertilization typically occurs about two weeks later. Development then progresses rapidly as cells divide, implantation occurs and the embryo begins forming.
When does an embryo become a fetus?
The fetal stage begins after the embryonic period, at approximately the ninth week after fertilization. Because pregnancy is dated from the last menstrual period, this corresponds to roughly Week 11 of pregnancy.
What develops during the first trimester?
During the first trimester, structures that become the brain and spinal cord develop, the heart and other organs begin forming, limbs develop, and facial features become increasingly defined.
What happens during the second and third trimesters?
During the second trimester, growth continues as movement becomes coordinated and systems including hearing and the lungs continue developing. During the third trimester, the brain, nervous system, lungs and other organs continue maturing while the baby gains weight and prepares for birth.
